Senate and Governorship Races

National Data

As previously discussed in Chapter Five, the 114th Congress has been called one of the most diverse sessions in U.S. history. It is important to acknowledge the advance in minority representation; however, the numbers demonstrate a lack of diversity that we have yet to overcome. One Asian/Pacific Islander, two Black, and three Latino versus 94 Whites presents a grim discrepancy among governmental representation. 17

In 2014, thirty-six states held gubernatorial elections, where twenty-five incumbents were successfully re-elected. Presently, only two Latinos and three Asian/Pacific Islanders are serving as governors, while the other 45 governors are White. Additionally, governors are overwhelmingly male (forty-five), with only five females in office. 2021
