The U.S. Senate Seats and Governorships
The Senate was under the Nation’s microscope in 2020 like never before. Not only were Senate elections during November given special attention, but a unique Georgia special election for two Senate seats was held in January. Control of the Senate hung in the balance with Democrats needing to win both seats and Republicans needing to win at least one. The Democrats won both, and though tied at 50-50, control of the Senate shifted to the Democrats with the Vice President voting in the event of a tie.
Black and Latino voters turned out in record numbers in major battleground states like Georgia, as well as in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico, and shifted control of the Senate.
In the last two non-presidential elections, 2014 and 2018, Black and Latino voters turned out in historically high numbers. During these last two election cycles, Latino voter turnout increased by 4.9 million additional voters. Both parties will have to vie for the Latino voter in order for Latinos to surpass their staggering election growth seen in our last two non-presidential elections. The outcome will determine which party will control the Senate.
